graffiti fragment(s)
spray enamel on paper
9” x 7”
2023

from GIVE UP: “painting an active street spot as part of my grand declaration to do a thousand ALEX fills i went over some advertising bills that had been pasted on the building. i must have JUST missed the bill paste guy because halfway through my fill i realized the wall was still wet. the paint started running like crazy. when i was finished i couldn't tell if it looked cool dripping so bad or like total trash, but it was passable from the road. i assumed they would replace the ads pretty much immediately, but a couple of weeks later the spot was still running. a friend tipped me off that under the weight of multiple generations of ads the whole thing was lifting off the wall, so i went and pulled it down in one giant sheet.”

the reclaimed sheet was then cut up into random 9" x 7" segments, complete with ripples and ridges caused by at minimum 6-7 generations of poster ads layered over themselves with glue, creating a semi-rigid plywood-like paper panel. painted using chrome, black, and ocean mist blue (as best recalled) rustoleum spray enamel. the resulting cropped fragment is a three-fold property: a physical artifact of otherwise temporal illegal graffiti, a tangible document of a declaration of love, and an original abstract art piece unto itself.

each 9" x 7" fragment is float-mounted under glass in a 10 3/4" tall by 8 3/4" wide by 1 1/8" shadowbox-style painted black frame, ready to hang. signed and dated by GIVE UP on the back side of the frame with an affixed color photo of the full original fill in the wild. (framed pieces shown here without glass to save glare in documentation - finished product ships with glass in frame.)
